Catholic Primary School

At St John's we grow and learn in the footsteps of Jesus.

Health and Safety

At St John’s Catholic Primary School, the health and safety of our pupils, staff, and wider school community is a top priority. We are committed to providing a safe, secure, and supportive environment where children can learn, play, and grow with confidence.

Our policies and procedures are regularly reviewed and updated to ensure they meet the highest standards and follow all statutory requirements. Staff are trained in safeguarding, first aid, and risk awareness, and we work closely with parents and external agencies to maintain a culture of safety and care. Guided by our Catholic ethos, we treat every member of our community with dignity and respect, ensuring their well-being is at the heart of all we do.

At St John’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to helping our pupils stay safe both in and out of school, which is why we offer Bike Safety Training as part of our wider health and well-being programme. This training provides children with the essential skills and knowledge they need to ride their bikes safely and responsibly, whether on the road or in the local community. Pupils learn about road awareness, signalling, wearing appropriate safety gear, and understanding traffic rules. Delivered by trained instructors, this practical and engaging experience supports our commitment to promoting independence, healthy lifestyles, and safety, all within the values of our caring Catholic community.

At St John’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality, age-appropriate drug education as part of our broader Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) curriculum. Rooted in our Catholic ethos, our approach promotes healthy, informed lifestyle choices that respect the dignity of the human person and the value of every individual.

Our drug education policy aims to:

  • Provide children with accurate and relevant information about drugs, including medicines, tobacco, alcohol, and illegal substances.

  • Help pupils understand the physical, emotional, and social risks associated with drug use and misuse.

  • Encourage informed decision-making and promote personal responsibility for health and well-being.

  • Build pupils' confidence, self-esteem, and resilience so they can resist peer pressure and make safe, respectful choices.

  • Strengthen partnerships with parents, carers, and external agencies to support a consistent and informed approach.

Drug education is delivered in a safe and supportive environment, primarily through PSHE and science lessons, and reinforced through our wider school values. We aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to lead safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives, in line with Gospel teachings and respect for themselves and others.

The school creates risk assessments for areas used for OPAL play and physical activity. Health and Safety Risk Assessments and Fire Risk Assessments are reviewed annually.
