Year 6 Mathematics Challenge
Yesterday, four Year 6 children represented St John’s in a Maths Competition held at Monkton Combe Prep. 42 teams participated. Children worked in pairs to solve a range of challenging mathematical problems. Out of the 42 pairs, Daniel M and Beatrice P came in first place, and Alan K and Antoni S in fifth place. This is a huge achievement and both pairs were fantastic ambassadors of St. John’s.

Remembrance Sunday
On Sunday 12th November 2023 Poppy, Georgia, Katie and Zoe took part in Trowbridge’s Remembrance parade, representing Trowbridge Sea Cadets.
The girls marched as part of the parade, attended the Remembrance Service at St. James’ Church, followed by the service at the War Memorial. The girls were amazing all morning and didn’t move a muscle when stood on parade at the war memorial. The cold and the rain didn’t phase them!
They have also given up some of their Saturday mornings recently to sell Poppies in Sainsburys.
Trowbridge Youth Parliament
This week, our Year 6 Trowbridge Youth Parliament representatives visited Paxcroft School to meet and vote for their new Chair.
Congratulations to Rose W who was voted in as Chair after delivering an excellent speech along with 13 others! With support from Bea E, our TYP team are set to do great things for our town this coming year.
KS2 Cross Country Event at The Clarendon Academy
Albert W completed the KS2 Cross Country Event at The Clarendon Academy on 16th October and came 1st in his age group. He was the only pupil from St. John’s who participated in this event and represented our school.
Albert and his parents would like to thank Mr Gerrish for coming along to support him at the event.
Congratulations and well done Albert on this amazing achievement.
Year 3 trip to Wagamamas
This week Year 3 had an amazing opportunity to spend a whole morning at Wagamamas in Trowbridge. During their visit they learnt about some of the exotic and exciting ingredients which go into the Asian inspired food and fresh juices. It was wonderful to see the children’s faces as they sampled all these new foods and flavours - the Tropical Smoothie was a real hit! However, the seaweed and bamboo shoots had mixed reviews. They also began to master the art of using chop sticks and competed in a chop-stick challenge! The children then sat down to sample the full Wagamama dining experience with their own Wagamama kids main meal. On our return to school, Mrs Sessions asked the children about the trip and the first response was, “This was the best trip ever!”
We would like to thank Mr and Mrs Maziarz for organising this unique opportunity and all of the Wagamama team. They are doing this all again next week for our Year 4s!
Feast of the Solemnity of All Saints Mass
On Wednesday morning the whole school - including our fantastic children in EYFS - joined the parishioners and Canon Tom to celebrate the Feast of the Solemnity of All Saints. It was a beautiful service were Canon Tom reflected on the uniqueness of each individual and how one day we could be saints! Thank you to the children in KS2 who supported us with reading and serving during the Mass and to the school choir who lead us so well in song. It was wonderful that so many parents and grandparents were able to join us too.
Parent Governor Vacancy
We currently have a vacancy for a parent governor on the Governing Board at the school. Parent governors are elected by other parents and support the Board in their strategic role, not the day to day running of the school. The role of a parent governor is not as a spokesperson for the views of parents; they are the same as all other governors on the Board, providing a 'parental viewpoint' ie representative parents rather than representative of parents.
You do not need to have a background in education, a range of work and life skills are valuable to bring to this role. You will need to be able to commit time to attend meetings at school and undertake training, and keep your knowledge up to date.
If you are interested in finding out more about what the role involves and the time commitment, please contact Mike Simmons, Chair of Governors, MSimmons@st-johns-trowbridge.wilts.sch.uk, who will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Winter Uniform
All pupils are to return to school after half term in their winter uniform. Details are on the school website. Also could girls with long hair please make sure it is tied back for school.
Now the weather is getting colder and wetter, please ensure your child wears a winter coat into school every day. Children will go out in the playground every day at both break time and lunchtime.
Chaplaincy Commissioning Service
On Thursday 11th October a group of senior Chapel Champions travelled to Clifton Cathedral to attend the Primary Chaplaincy Commissioning Service led by Bishop Declan. It was a wonderful occasion and the children from St. John's were exemplary role models of our school values. They promised to commit to the challenge of being a leader and peace builder in our world today and Bishop Declan challenged each child to be ambitious in what they can achieve. Over 450 children attended the event from across the Diocese and it was a joyous occasion. Many thanks to Mrs Clare Doogue, RE Governor, who once again so generously gave up her time to support the children in this most important role.
Harvest Service
On Friday 6th October the whole school - including Foundation Stage children - celebrated a wonderful Harvest Service together led by Canon Tom. Thank you so much to every family that contributed to the Service we had over 200 donations of food and toiletries which is fantastic! All of the items will go to families in our local area and we look forward to working with Trowbridge Foodbank over the coming year. Congratulations to our Year 5 children, Theo K and Ella H who have been selected as Food Bank Friday Leaders and they will be co-ordinating the weekly Foodbank collections.
