Whole School Mass on Thursday 9th March 2023
This week the whole school celebrated our feast day for St John of God with a wonderful gathering including parishioners at St John the Baptist Catholic Church. The children sang and read with joy and reverence showing pride in their school family. At this point in the year we especially pray for and remember the important work of the St John of God sisters who established our school community in 1926. Thank you to Canon Tom for leading us and to the families who were able to join us in our celebration.
Foundation Stage LIVE Maths Lesson
As live phonics was a great success in Term 3, during Term 4, we would like to welcome Foundation Stage parents into the classrooms to watch a maths lesson. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how you can best support your child at home with their mathematical development.
This will take place during the week beginning 20th March at 9am.
Please liaise with your child’s teacher to arrange a day to come in that week.
Dorothy House Elf Run
Back in Term 2, pupils took part in raising money for Dorothy House.
The children were sponsored by their families and friends to run a specific target of a mile or more. It was great to see the track being enthusiastically used and children looked great in their elf hats!
We are so proud of what we raised as a school. Last Friday, some of the sports council presented a cheque to Tracey from Dorothy house. She was amazed by our total of £1093.70.
Well done to all those that took part and a big thank you to your families for all your support. This is a fantastic achievement!

Children’s Mental Health Week
This week is Children's Mental Health Week. The PSHE Heroes and some KS2 children have planned and ran some lunchtime activities to show how we connect with each other and support each other in times of need. We also enjoyed a Wake and Shake bringing all the children in the school together!
Dance Festival - Tuesday 7th February 2023
On Tuesday evening, the children in Dance Club performed at the Bath Forum for the West Wilts Dance Festival. The theme for this year’s Festival was, ‘It’s A Kind Of Magic’.
With the help of Caroline “the dance lady”, the children had been working hard to create and perfect a dance routine based on this theme.
The children chose the option of Disney’s Fantasia.
They performed their routine with great energy. It was professionally and beautifully executed with their mop and bucket props. They left the audience ‘spell bound’.
Well done to everyone involved!
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Club
For the last 4 weeks, the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors have led a story telling club at lunchtimes. They have read themed books linked to respect, friendship, kindness, worries, bullying and much more. This is work going towards their next badge based on respect. Children from KS1 and KS2 have enjoyed the club.
LKS2 Roman Day - Friday 3rd February 2023
The children in Years 3 & 4 spent Friday bringing alive their learning by dressing up and doing activities throughout the day. The day started with a “fashion show” to show off their costumes and introduce themselves using their Roman names. There was a medical to see if they were fit for the Roman Army. A drill to test their marching skills. A test of their knowledge of the Roman Empire. As well as, learning their Roman numerals, a food-tasting experience, playing a Roman game called “Merels” and naming the equipment of a Roman Legionary. They also enjoyed the public toilet set up outside Classes 6 & 7, with a sponge on a stick to clear up with! Thanks for all your efforts to get them ready for the day!
Wiltshire Air Ambulance
Members of the Wiltshire Ambulance Team visited St. John’s School on Monday 9th January to delivering basic emergency training to pupils in KS1.
Wiltshire Air Ambulance had asked for a voluntary contribution of £2 per child to help fund their vital work. We raised £124.00
Thank you to everyone who contributed to their appeal.
OFSTED Report
Dear Parents and Carers
I write to congratulate everybody on the report which has now been published, following the inspection in November.
I view the school as one big family, and know that together the Senior Leadership Team, Staff, Parents, Children and my Fellow Governors all contributed to St. Johns being a Good school with certainly some outstanding elements.
I look forward to building on the achievement of this report together.
Best Wishes on behalf of the Governing Board.
Mike Simmons
Chair of Governors
