Advent Penitential Service - Friday 25th November 2022
On Friday morning the whole school celebrated our Advent Penitential Service and reflected on Matthew's Gospel 5:1-12 The Beatitudes. The Chapel Champions led us beautifully in our reflection and posed the following questions:
Blessed are the poor in spirit – am I poor in spirit? Do I value God’s everyday gifts: light and life, food and water, creation? Do I always want more?
Blessed are those who mourn – do I reach out to those who are feeling down, or am I too wrapped up in my own concerns?
Blessed are the meek – do I think it is more important to shout and get my own way?
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness – do I stand up for justice and protect those who are treated badly? Do I avoid actions that harm the earth and its poorest people?
Blessed are the merciful – have I forgiven the people who hurt me? Or do I hold grudges? Do I welcome outsiders, with the same mercy I would like shown to me? Or do I ignore them?
Blessed are the pure in heart – am I pure in heart, trying to see God in the world around me? Where is my focus?
Blessed are the peacemakers - do I try to make peace between friends who have fallen out? Or do I pour fuel on the fire and encourage them to ignore each other or to fight?
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake – if someone criticises me for doing something good, how do I react?
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account – how often have I stood up for my faith? Or for what is right? Am I afraid to stand out from the crowd?
Class 3 will be holding their Liturgy on Tuesday 29th November at 9.05am in their classroom.
Parents and grandparents are welcome. Please come to the office to sign in the visitors book. Thank you.

OFSTED Inspection
On Tuesday 22nd November and Wednesday 23rd November we welcomed Mr Richard Lucas, His Majesty's Inspector from OFSTED.
We are currently waiting for the written report which will be shared with you as soon as we can. A huge thank you to the school community for your ongoing loyal support and to the Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Administrative Team who once again demonstrated their commitment to our school family. But most importantly to the children who were shining examples of our ethos and mission.
Maths Challenge
Four Year 6 children represented St. John’s in a Year 6 Maths Challenge held at Monkton Combe Prep School. The event was exciting, challenging and certainly energetic. The children represented the school excellently and ended up coming 18th out of 30 schools.
Lantern Workshop
On Monday 14th November a local artist Jenny Quigley came into school to run a Lantern Workshop.
Pupils made the lanterns out of willow vines. The pupils wrapped white tissue paper around the shape of the lantern and decorated them using coloured tissue paper.
We are hoping the pupils will be representing St. John’s at the Trowbridge Lantern parade tonight with their lanterns.
Anti-Bullying Week
St John’s has taken part in Anti-Bullying Week this week. All classes attended the BBC live lesson to learn about bullying and how to be a good 'ally' to others. The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors led activities at play time and offered teachers reading books to share with their class.
KS1 Crib Reflection
KS1 children will be leading a Crib Reflection in St John the Baptist Catholic Church on Wednesday 14th December at 6.00pm.
All families and friends invited and we look forward to sharing the children's reflections and singing on the preparation for the birth of Jesus.
Downside Abbey
Sophia and Chante in Year 5 were two children who represented our school community at Downside Abbey with Bishop Declan.
Read what they had to say on the visit.......'On Friday we were so lucky to travel on the school mini bus to Downside Abbey and attend the Chaplaincy Service. We were with 300 other Chapel Champions from schools across the Diocese. It was a beautiful sunny day but when we arrived we were amazed by the awe and wonder of the Abbey - none of us have ever been inside an Abbey before! We definitely want to go back! Each of us sang and reflected on the role we have to lead this year and Bishop Declan said we had to have courage to stand up for what is right. We were so proud to receive our Chaplaincy badges from the Bishop and even managed to meet with him at the end of the service. We can't wait to develop our Chapel Champion role this year.'
